The folklore festival Baltica will take place from the 16th to the 21st June 2018. The theme of this year’s festival is “Summer solstice. Bloom” and the festival will be concluded with the celebration of the summer solstice in all the historic regions of Latvia and in Rīga.
Baltica is an important event for the Baltic peoples, demonstrating the traditional cultural values – songs, instrumental music, storytelling, games, dance and applied arts, craftsmanship and other expressions of traditional culture. The festival will feature traditional ethnographic ensembles, folk music collectives and groups, storytellers and other solo performers. Latvia first hosted Baltica in 1988 and thus the festival was one of the pioneers of the National independence movement. In the year of the 100th anniversary of the Latvian state, Latvia will host the festival for the 11th time.
The festival events will take place in Rīga, Līgatne, Dikļi, Kocēni, Aizkraukle, Ādaži, Cēsis, Dagda, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jūrkalne, Turaida and Viļaka.
In Latvia, the International Folklore festival Baltica is organized by the National Culture center of Latvia in collaboration with regional and city councils.
